Homemade Flour tortillas are essential in the home kitchen. In addition to being a critical component for a number of Mexican dishes, flour tortillas can be used in countless other ways. Think mini pizzas, wraps, roll-ups, and more.
It is easy to find pre-made tortillas in your grocery store, but quality and taste vary greatly. Making tortillas yourself gives you the opportunity to make a delicious, tasty, and warm treat that is perfect for you next meal (or to snack on while they are still fresh and hot right of the griddle).
The Simplicity of Homemade Flour Tortillas
Five ingredients is all that is needed to make your own Homemade Flour Tortillas. As you will see from the recipe, most, if not all, of the ingredients are already in your kitchen. That means that you can be surrounded by fresh and warm tortillas in no time.
The process is easy too. This recipe uses a food processor to do all the work of mixing the dough. You basically get to stand around, putting very little effort into the mixing process.
If you have a tortilla press available, shaping tortillas is a snap. Otherwise, a rolling pin can be used. The rolling pin takes a little more effort and a little more skill to make the tortilla the shape and thickness you want.
Cooking is a breeze with a griddle or cast iron skillet. Cook once on each side to get the color you want while the tortilla puffs up. It is an amazing show.

- 450g Bread Flour
- 15g Kosher Salt
- 12g Baking Powder
- 130g Shortening, Lard, Beef Tallow or semi-solid fat. Softened, not melted, not hard.
- 250g Water
Mix the tortilla dough
Add flour, salt, and baking powder to a food processor. Pulse food processor until ingredients are mixed.
Add softened fat. Pulse ingredients until resembling coarse sand.
Heat the water to 100F. Stream water into food processor while mixing. Allow ingredients to mix until the dough forms a ball and starts pulling away from the sides of the processor. Allow to run a bit longer to knead the dough.
Once mixed and the dough is pulling-away from the sides of the food processor, turn off the food processor and allow the dough to rest inside the food processor for about 30 minutes.
Portion the Tortilla Dough
When done resting, turn out onto a lightly floured surface, knead briefly, and shape the dough into a ball.
Divide the dough into 30g to 50g portions.
Tuck edges of the dough into the center and pinch to seal the center. Then, table-roll the dough portions until smooth and round.
Cover with a damp towel to allow the tortilla dough to relax. The damp towel will help prevent the dough from drying out. About 15 min.
Shape and Cook the Tortillas
Flatten dough into a tortilla shape using a rolling pin, tortilla press, or a tortilla griddle.
Cook the tortilla on both sides. Remove the tortillas from the heat and place in a covered container to keep warm. DON"T OVERCOOK.
For a tasty treat, serve with melted butter. Otherwise, use for your favorite Mexican meal or with your next inspired cheeseburger.
Enjoy!
