You know, I love sushi. But, I love Cheeseburger Sushi even more.
One night out at a local sushi restaurant I was thinking about how I was going to be hungry as soon as I stepped out of the restaurant and I would probably have to stop and get a cheeseburger somewhere.
Combining a cheeseburger with sushi in a strict approach didn't really sound too appealing.
What if we took your traditional sushi roll and used it as inspiration to create a reconstructed cheeseburger where we could enjoy eating a cheeseburger and enjoy the sushi eating experience all at the same time?
That is what we have here with Cheeseburger Sushi. In this original recipe, we take flavorful ground beef mixed with cheese and seasonings and wrap it up in a tasty, buttery, flakey puff-pastry dough and bake it to perfection. The slices are then presented in a row, with sauces and toppings in a way that gives off a real sushi vibe.
Plus it is rich, tasty, and extremely filling.

Directions for making Cheeseburger Sushi
Remove the box of pastry sheets from the freezer and allow it to thaw for about 1-2 hours.
Add dehydrated onions to the water and allow to re- hydrate - about 20 minutes.
Add the ground beef, cooked and cooled rice, high-temp cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper into a mixing bowl.
Mix well to distribute the seasonings.
Add the re-hydrated onions along with any remaining water and the cooked and diced bacon. Mix until combined and the mixture starts to become tacky. We want the filling of our Cheeseburger Sushi to stick together after cooking.
Divide filling into 2 equal portions. Place filling onto a sheet of plastic wrap and begin shaping the filling into a long cylinder. Twist ends of the plastic wrap close and continue shaping the filling into a cylinder that is just slightly longer than the length of the puff pastry sheet. Place the wrapped filling into the refrigerator for about 1 hour to chill.
When the filling is chilled, remove the puff pastry dough from the box and wrapper. Place it on a lightly-floured work surface. Use a rolling pin to smooth the pastry and make it a little bit thinner and a little bit larger.
Remove the Cheeseburger Sushi meat filling from plastic wrap and place it along one edge of the pastry sheet. Lift the edge of the pastry sheet and begin rolling it around the filling. Roll until the pastry overlaps by 1/2 in to 1 in. Cut off excess pastry dough. Use egg wash or water to seal the edge. Place seam side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Place the rolls into the freezer to chill for approx 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350F/177C.
For the egg wash, mix together one egg and one tbsp of water.
Remove rolls from the freezer. Place rolls on a cutting board. Cut each roll into approximately 1 inch segments. Apply the egg wash to the tops and sides of each of the rolls. Sprinkle segments with sesame seeds. Place segments on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Place the baking sheet with segments into the pre-heated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes. The tops of the puff pastry should be golden brown and the filling should be above 150F. Remove from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes.
Prepare the “sushi” sauce by mixing together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, sriracha, and worcestershire.
On a serving plate, arrange the cooked segments side-by-side in a row. Drizzle with the “sushi” sauce. Sprinkle the Cheeseburger Sushi with diced pickles, diced onions, and chopped bacon (if you have any extra).
