The name “hoagie” is hotly debates. The name is commonly associated with Italian-American immigrants working at the Hog Island shipyard in Philadelphia during World War I. For lunch, the immigrant workers would bring sandwiches made with long rolls. The story says that these sandwiches were reportedly called “Hog Island sandwiches.” Over time, that name was condensed to “hoggie.” With a strong Philly accent, “hoggie” became “hoagie.”
