Burger Breakdown

The Visit

Cool place to visit. Virginia City, NV is a historic mining town and the Palace Saloon and Restaurant is located in an old building from back in the day. Creaky wooden floors and an old wooden bar take you back in time.

I arrived before noon and right before the lunch rush. Since I was dining alone, I grabbed a seat at the bar. Had a great view of the restaurant and out to the street. Great place for people-watching.

Menu Options

The Palace Saloon and Restaurant is certainly a burger place. Twenty burgers to choose from. You can find something starting with your basic burger all the way to something more exotic and heart-stopping like the Grilled Cheese BLT Burger. Plenty of options and plenty of reason to come back for another visit.

On this visit, I ordered the Fried Pickle Bacon Cheeseburger. This cheeseburger comes with the basics: lettuce, tomato, thousand islands, and American cheese. The bonus items are spicy deep-fried dill pickles and bacon. 

At the Table

The Fried Pickle Bacon Cheeseburger comes to the table in a paper-lined basket with a heaping order of fries. A toothpick secured the sandwich. Nice, classic cheeseburger presentation.

The Bun

The bun worked well with the rest of the cheeseburger. It was nice and firm. Had a bit more tooth than a typical but was not tough or chewy. I always prefer a bun that can stand up to a gourmet cheeseburger.

Condiments and Toppings

Sliced tomato, shredded lettuce (my favorite), and thousand island dressing. This is a great start for a cheeseburger. Lettuce and tomato were fresh. It would have been nice if they seasoned the tomatoes. Thousand island dressing was a good recipe; brough a nice sweet and creamy tang to the meal. Could have stopped there and would have totally enjoyed the burger.

This sandwich also came with American cheese, bacon, and deep-fried pickles. No problem with the cheese and bacon. Both were a good addition to the sandwich. I felt that the pickles brought the sandwich down a bit. They appeared to be cooked ahead of time and sat in a warmer which made the exterior a bit soggy. Also, the pickles were tough; hard to bite through and hard to chew. Not sure if the toughness was from setting for a long time or a result of the frying process. I've had fried pickles before and they had a different consistency.

The Burger

The burger patty seemed dry to me and a bit over-cooked. Not a fan.

On the Side

Fries were good. Nice and crispy and plenty of them. Salted just right.

Final Words

I would have to give this another try at another time. The concept was good and flavors all fit together. I would like to have a juicier burger and another chance with the deep-fried pickles.
