Burger Breakdown

The Visit

We were deep into the Burger Battle in Davis, CA and the next stop on the list was Outpost Burger. From their menu, the entered the Double Onion Smash Burger as a contender to win first place in the challenge. So, on a sunny day during lunch, I headed to downtown Davis to give their burger a try.

It is counter-service at Outpost Burger. You walk up to the counter, tell them your order, and then take a seat. When your order is ready, they either call your name or text you. Not sure why I have to give them my phone number if they call out my name.

No reservations are available at Outpost Burger. It is strickly first come, first served here. I wouldn't worry about needing a reservation. Plenty of open seating here.

Ordering was fast and easy. There was no line. I was able to get my order in straight-away.

Outpost Burger has a big, spacious dining area. Plenty of seating inside. If the weather is nice, they have patio seating as well. Patio seating would be fantastic on those balmy summer evenings.

So...tell me about your burgers.

Outpost Burger has six different burgers to choose from. You have the Onion Smash, Double Onion Smash, Deluxe Onion Smash, Chili Onion Smash, Zesty Bacon Onion Smash, and the BBQ Bacon Smash. There appears to be a pattern here.

I opted for the Double Onion Smash - the entry for the Davis Downtown Burger Battle. This burger includes onions (of course) American cheese, pickles, switchback sauce all on a soft potato bun. Typical condiments for a smash-style burger.

Burgers come solo. If you want a side, you have to purchase one.

The Double Onion Smash runs just under $11, a side of fries are $4, and a fountain drink is $3. You can make it a combo and save $1.50.(09/15/2024).

Let's See What We Have Here

This was a dine in event. Picked a table near the window so we could watch the world go by.

Upon arrival, everything looked good. Paper-wrapped burger looked juicy, crispy, springy, and melty. Side of steak fries were looking hot.

Have you tried the bread?

Nice, fresh, squishy bun. No toasting. It was a good tasting bun. Would use them in the Cheeseburger Guru kitchen any day of the week.

Let's look under the hood of this baby.

The Double Onion Smash burger came to the table fully assembled and ready to eat. Only thing you need to do is pull back on the paper wrapper a bit so you can full-on attack the burger.

Comes with what they call "switchback sauce." Not sure what it it made of. Definitely a mayo-based sauce with some other ingredients. Overall the sauce was creamy with minimal flavor.

Produce on this burger was good. It only had pickles to give it a fresh crunch. The acid and the salt of the pickles helped cut throught the fatty, cheesey burgers.

Cheese was traditional American cheese. Melty and gooey.

Since this was a smashburger, definitely cooked on a flat top. It had a nice aroma. Smashburgers need to be cooked hot and fast or they become dried-out. This burger was on the dry side of the scale. Could have been a little crispier with lacey edges. I wasn't getting much of a beefy flavor. Could have used a bit more salt, in my opinion.

So, who are your your friends here?

Ordered the Double Onion Smash with a side of fries. Outpost Burger serves steak fries. They were big, crispy, salty, and fresh. It was a decent portion of fries. Perfect side dish for lunch. You don't need an afternoon "carb crash" from eating too many fries.

It's a Wrap

Overall, the Double Onion Smash was a mid smashburger. Improve the cook a bit to get a better crispy and juicy patty, season a little more, brighten-up the pickles to balance out the fat a little better, and punch-up the switchback sauce a bit and it would be top-notch!

Final words...

The Double Onion Smash at Outpost Burger is a good value. It is a decently-priced double burger. If you get the combo, it makes for a nice lunch. Give Outpost Burger a try and let me know what you think.
