Burger Breakdown
The Visit
In the lovely town of Napa, Ca, the wine capital of California. I was in town to enjoy the Napa Lighted Art Festival which runs from mid January to mid February. Thought I would enjoy the Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin' BBQ for dinner.
Super nice vibe.Shelves, holding various whiskey, are placed along the walls around the restaurant. Taxidermied moose and buffalo heads adorn the walls. They have regular dining tables, small high-top tables, and community high-top tables. Plenty of neon signs providing additional light to the space.
The Bounty Hunter is a table service restaurant. Be sure to get reservations if you want to have some dinner. It was quite crowded for dinner. Since I had reservations, there was no wait, seated immediately. I had a choice between a private high-top or a community high-top. Went with the community option.
So...tell me about your burgers.
There is only one burger on the menu. So, I went with The Bounty Burger.
Onions, bread and butter pickle slices, special sauce (saloon sauce), and aged white cheddar cheese are the default condiments. I love bread and butter pickles and was very pleased to see this condiment came on the sandwich. The pickles had a nice flavor. Fresh, crisp red onions were part of the program too. Saloon sauce, mayonnaise-based, had a nice flavor as well.
Additional toppings for the cheeseburger are available, but they come at a hefty price. Jalapeños, caramelized onions, crispy onions, pimento cheese, and blue cheese will cost you an extra $3 each. Avocado and house-smoked bacon will cost you $4 each. A couple of these extras will bring your burger into the $30 range.
Let's See What We Have Here
Nice presentation. Picture-perfect cheeseburger, house-made pickle spear, and a serving of coleslaw. Plate was a bit large for the burger; makes the burger look small in the images.
Have you tried the bread?
The menu indicated that this was a brioche roll. To me, it didn't have that sweet buttery taste that is typical of a brioche roll. The exterior wasn't that buttery gold color and the crumb was, well, a bit crumbly compared to a brioche roll. It had more of a French roll/standard burger bun vibe to it. Regardless of the style, the bun was fresh and tasty.
The biggest drawback with the bun was that it was not toasted on the inside or the outside. This bun was screaming to have that crispy, buttery crust that holds all of the ingredients together and that helps keep the bun from falling apart while eating.
Let's look under the hood of this baby.
Red onion was nice and fresh. The thin slice of onion was separated into rings when added to the cheeseburger. Bread and butter pickles brought a nice sweet, crunch to the game. These were nice and thick so you could get a more pronounced flavor of the condiment with each bite. The simplicity of only a few toppings worked together to enhance the flavor of the meat and the sandwich overall.
The Bounty Burger came loaded with their "saloon sauce." The sauce is a standard mayonnaise-based sauce with their secret blend of seasonings. Brings a nice layer of flavor to the cheeseburger. Plus, the heavy application of the sauce helped soften the edge of the untoasted bun.
Cheese was nice and melty. Aged white cheddar added a nice punch to the cheeseburger. Perfect melt on the cheese as it flowed over the edges of the burger patty in a picture-perfect pattern without breaking. The chef certainly knows how to handle various cheeses.
The simplicity of only a few toppings worked together to enhance the flavor of the meat and the sandwich overall.
Nice meaty aroma of the patty. Overall, sandwich smelled delicious. Meat blend was nice and juicy. Tender with a good bite. Good grind. You know you are biting into a nice 8 oz. burger patty.
Could have used a bit more salt. Pepper would be a good addition.
I think what was missing the most with this cheeseburger was a nice smoke flavor. The Bounty Hunter is a BBQ restaurant and boasts smoked meats. It would be nice if there was a nice smokey BBQ note to the meat patty. Would have really kicked it up a level.
So, who are your your friends here?
Burger comes with a choice of kettle chips or coleslaw. I opted for the coleslaw to get some extra fresh veg in on the meal. Coleslaw was crisp and creamy with a nice flavor. My dinner date ordered a sandwich with the kettle chips. They were good too. Either side dish will be a good choice at the Bounty Hunter.
Coleslaw was a nice choice. Crispy cabbage and carrots in a nice slaw sauce. Went well with the BBQ theme of the restaurant and as a side to the Bounty Burger. If you wanted to, you could have added a portion of coleslaw to the cheeseburger. Would have brought a bit of cabbage crisp to the party.
It's a Wrap
The Bounty Burger is a great-tasting cheeseburger. All of the components work well together for a truly flavorful sandwich. The crunchy pickles, fresh onions, sauce, juicy patty, and melty cheese are delicious.
Unfortunately, the lack of toasting on the bun really brings this burger down a couple levels.
Final words...
Cost of the burger was on par with the size of the patty, restaurant, and location. I felt that the cost of the add-ons was a bit high.
Despite its shortcomings, The Bounty Burger is worth its price tag. The cheeseburger and coleslaw combo made for a nice meal. You can tell that the kitchen puts in a lot of work on this sandwich.
I have been to The Bounty Hunter before and will certainly return in the future.
Perhaps I will give their Reuben sandwich a try.
