The Visit

When exploring Waikiki, be sure to take a look down side-streets and alleys. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. This was how I discovered the Bacon Deluxe with Cheese at Betty’s Burgers in Waikiki.

On a business trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, I had some free time and was able to spend the afternoon in Waikiki. I love to explore and find places to eat that are “off the beaten path” and have more of a local feel than the touristy feel.

The Royal Hawaiian Dining Plaza is just such a place. It is a small food court that is home to a handful of restaurants.

  • Leo’s Taverna
  • Desi’s Indian Curry
  • The Happy Hawaiian Café
  • Honolulu Tacos
  • Ramen Ezogiku
  • Betty’s Burgers

I discovered Betty’s just after the lunch rush, about 1pm on a Wednesday. Traffic was light so we were able to order straight-away. Betty’s is window service only; walk up, make your order, and grab a seat in the shared sitting area. If it is busy, you are standing in line to order and perhaps walking to the beach to eat.

Food came out quickly event though it is a small space with only two people working. The cashier was busy taking phone orders while helping people at the counter. Cook in the back was slinging burgers.

The Royal Hawaiian Dining Plaza is a row of six businesses that share a common eating area. Enclosed on all sides except for the entrance on Waikolu Way and an open pathway in the back that exits to Royal Hawaiian Ave. The setup is nice because you are in the shade and the openings at both ends provide a nice breeze. It is not all palm trees and sunsets, but it is cool and clean.

So...tell me about your burgers.

Betty’s is definitely a burger joint. They offer 15 different burgers. However, I must discount a few options because I don’t count fish, chicken, and veggies as burgers.

On the menu today was the Bacon Deluxe w/ Cheese and a side of fries. Everything on the menu is a-la-carte.

The Bacon Deluxe comes with a ¼ lb patty, American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and BB sauce (mayo-based). The standard cheeseburger at Betty’s comes with American cheese, lettuce, and BB sauce. The “deluxe” adds the tomato, onion, and pickle. Totally worth the $2 upgrade price.

At the time of my visit, the Bacon Deluxe w/ Cheese came in at $10.75 and the fries were $5.95.

Let's See What We Have Here

I made my order and grabbed a table in the common area. Food came out quickly. My burger and fries arrived in a chipboard box with a red checkered paper liner. Burger was on the paper and fries were in a paper boat. Looked great! Looked like a big meal.

Have you tried the bread?

The burger bun was nice and fresh. Likely a potato roll. Fluffy and springy. Had a nice toast on the inside; caramelized ring along the edges with a nice toast in the center. Delicious seedless bun!

Let's look under the hood of this baby.

The Bacon Deluxe w/ Cheese came fully assembled and ready to eat. Had a nice application of their “BB sauce.” Just enough to give it some moisture and not enough to drip all over the place.

Produce was perfect. Tomatoes were nice and sweet. Shredded iceberg was crunchy. As were the pickles and the onions. Nice thin ringlets of onion provided flavor without overpowering the flavor of the meat. American cheese was nice and melty. Bacon was on the softer side of things but cooked enough so you could bite through it easily.

The burger was a quasi-smashburger. It was smashed on the grill.Had a good Maillard reaction on each side but was not smashed paper thin. Still nice and thick to give it a good beefiness.

It arrived cooked medium-well. Still had plenty of juice to make the burger patty absolutely delicious. Nice aroma, tender, and well-seasoned. Love the way they cook their patties and assemble their burgers.

So, who are your your friends here?

A side of fries were ordered. These were steak fries; nice, big, and potato-eee. The fries had a coating on them. My guess would be a seasoned potato flour. Tasty. Salty. Crunchy. Definitely worth the price of admission.

It's a Wrap

Betty’s is a fantastic burger joint that is tucked away on a side street and is serving up some great burgers. I was extremely pleased with the Bacon Deluxe w/ Cheese. The ingredients came together well and created a tasty treat. It was a BIG burger that was so good that I wanted to eat another. I would have paid the price though for eating two of them.

Fries are good too. Definitely add them to your order. Betty’s also serves onion rings. I will be trying those on my next visit.

And, from what I’ve heard, Betty’s makes some of the best milkshakes in Waikiki. Take the kids and get a cool treat. Betty’s also has a kid’s menu with some kid-friendly options.

Final words...

When you visit Waikiki, make sure you stop at Betty’s Burgers. It is the perfect spot to take a break from the sun, surf, and tourists. You can decompress and nosh on one of the top burgers on the island.

If you are just getting started for the day, get a Bacon Deluxe w/ Cheese and head to Waikiki Beach. Get some sun while you enjoy your burger.
